“Was not their mistake once more bred of the life of slavery that they had been living?—a life which was always looking upon everything, except mankind, animate and inanimate—‘nature,’ as people used to call it—as one thing, and mankind as another, it was natural to people thinking in this way, that they should try to make ‘nature’ their slave, since they thought ‘nature’ was something outside them” — William Morris

The Fashion of Fashion

...What is about the term? Is it because it brings up images of models? I'm not sure what is wrong with it. I believe you might see your own reflection there if you think it's a negative term.

I can easily think of several similar, far more obviously negative terms: “flavor of the month” springs to mind.

I think what's wrong with the term is that it suggests femininity. Heaven forbid we be fashionable!

Reading tone into prose is always about seventy percent mind projection. Trust me I'm a professional prose reader!
