“Was not their mistake once more bred of the life of slavery that they had been living?—a life which was always looking upon everything, except mankind, animate and inanimate—‘nature,’ as people used to call it—as one thing, and mankind as another, it was natural to people thinking in this way, that they should try to make ‘nature’ their slave, since they thought ‘nature’ was something outside them” — William Morris

Galloway Not Sokal

I was at NYU during the Sokal affair, as a visiting assistant professor.

Bill Benzon (see his comment on a previous post) has it exactly upside down. Galloway is not suggesting we fall for a hoax to do with a computational universe. He is the one who has hoaxed himself into supposing that we have anything to do with object oriented programming. And by simple bottom of the linguistic turn barrel argument by pun.

We are the ones who have called fraud on this kind of MO.

Sokal was both cunning and a physicist. Neither trait is in operation in the CI piece.
