“Was not their mistake once more bred of the life of slavery that they had been living?—a life which was always looking upon everything, except mankind, animate and inanimate—‘nature,’ as people used to call it—as one thing, and mankind as another, it was natural to people thinking in this way, that they should try to make ‘nature’ their slave, since they thought ‘nature’ was something outside them” — William Morris

I Just Sent this Note to My 101 Students and You Should Read It too

Hi! Everyone did much better on this quiz than the first one: good progress!

But not enough of you defined phenomenology as "the how is the what."

Phenomenology began as a philosophical movement that decided to "bracket" our assumptions about things and just look at the data. The Greek for this bracketing is epoche and that's what they called it ("ay-pogh-air").

Data is how something is manifesting. Data tells you about what is manifesting.

The how is the what.

The phenomenology of the way the discipline of psychology deploys the word "phenomenology" is "subjective experience," because psychology has a strong vein of scientism running through it, unfortunately. It's interesting that the closer science gets to human beings the more scientistic (aka religious) it becomes. Theoretical physicists don't talk like that.

The phenomenology of the way the record store defines "phenomenology" is "subjective experience."

There is unfortunately an overlap between psychology and the record store.

The reason for this is that old creaky tweets such as "subject" and "object" (find me one of those in the universe, please!) are still very powerful. We don't want to give them up. Which is a shame, because if we are ever going to get over the legacy of slavery, we really ought to try.

Yours, Tim Morton

Patreon Update

There are now almost three hundred of us, and I've uploaded over seventy episodes of my podcast. Two artists have taken me up on an offer to promote their work on the site and I'm really enjoying the role of building a feeling of community in this way.

Join My Patreon and Get Promoted

I've decided that one of the greatest things I can use my Patreon for is to help to promote other people's work. An artist member just told me about their show, and I asked them if I could promote it on the site, and they agreed. So if you'd like me to help out with a publication or an exhibition of any kind, please do join!

Alan White RIP

The drummer of Yes, erstwhile drummer for Lennon. To be absolutely honest I prefer his drumming to Bill Bruford's, in the end (!). Yeah I know I know but, technically proficient isn't the same as musically powerful. Heavy heavy action paintings.

This is another heretical thing especially as I love 70s Yes. But I also love 80s Yes and this is an underrated amazing album, one of their best, and this is one of the most extraordinary things they ever made, I feel. Underground nuclear testing is a theme in the background, and world revolution is the foreground. And it's got some extra heavy White drumming...

Blake Interview Today

I've done a lot of interviews but this is a very exciting one for me, with the Blake Society of the UK. I've been wanting to write about Blake since I was 19 and finally I've found a way to do so.

Fascinating: My Most Obscure Book Is Now My Most Popular

Well, according to the sales figures, Dark Ecology outperformed Being Ecological and Humankind and All Art is Ecological by a big margin. And Hyperobjects

In fact I've never received such good sales figures.

I'm going to have a go at explaining why on my Patreon this morning.

Also: I'm deeply diving into The Dawn of Everything (have you yet? You absolutely must) and what is also intriguing is, Dark Ecology predicted this argument and I am sure Graeber didn't read it! I very much like it when people I like and whose intellect I trust (was just making friends with him when he died) come to the same conclusions as me. Especially if they're using different sets of tools: "philosophy" and "anthropology" (I'm sure they would put that word in quotation marks too).

The overlap? A sense of the ridiculous. Comedy. It's a really important overlap actually. I'll talk about it on Patreon today.

Podcast about the New Blog Look

 I really really like it.

Does anyone have a screenshot of the previous two versions?

Anyone remember the duck-rabbit look from 2008?

And how about the Black Lodge look from 2010 until last week?

Anyway, if you sign up to my Patreon you can hear 20 minutes of me talking about a whole lot of stuff about this blog.

Thank you for being part of this adventure!
