The improvised power supply failed. The CPAP has some kind of sensor in it that detects pressure and I think the power from the supply was erratic enough to fool the sensor into "thinking" I wasn't breathing.
So every breath resulted in the CPAP turning on and then off. Needless to say I didn't use it after that arose. So I've had my first night without the machine for a while.
It's deeply disturbing. I'm aware I can't breathe and I keep waking up.

Tim, you may be aware of this already but there are sleep apnea mouthguards you can get off ebay. Basically you put them in hot water, bite into them to make a mold, and then wear them at night when you sleep. It's not ideal but it should help until you get your CPAP fixed.
Thanks to your blog I was able to diagnose sleep apnea in my father whom I could hear snoring in the room next to me and constantly spluttering and waking up. Poor guy is still waiting for his machine, but if it hadn't been for me hearing it, he would have never realized he had the condition and just gotten worse and worse.
