“Was not their mistake once more bred of the life of slavery that they had been living?—a life which was always looking upon everything, except mankind, animate and inanimate—‘nature,’ as people used to call it—as one thing, and mankind as another, it was natural to people thinking in this way, that they should try to make ‘nature’ their slave, since they thought ‘nature’ was something outside them” — William Morris

Pink Slime

ABC getting in trouble today for its reporting on massively mechanized meat manufacture. Good for them for exposing it.
I remember--and this was one of the worst moments for me at food-biz UC Davis--how my suggestion that we invite Marion Nestle, author of Food Politics, to speak, was nixed by the now director of the Humanities Institute: "We don't want any muckrakers here."

Threw me into depression for weeks...But that was 2003. And now ABC is on it. Good.
