Anti-Thatcher Sounds
It still amazes me that these guys were at number one three times in a row, then at number 2. Their work basically said “You want hedonism and pleasure, Thatcherite yuppies? You are utilitarians? Okay, you got it.”
I remember going to the beach in the summer of 1984 and everyone was wearing a “Frankie Say” t-shirt emblazoned with phrases such as Frankie Say War/Hide Yourself. That “Two Tribes” with the impersonator of Reagan quoting Hitler's trial...
You should really listen to the album version of this. It's like some demonically brilliant combination of Yes and disco. Thank Trev.
But the video works: the sight of two out ex-punk gay guys pursuing the car in a chopper; the carnivalesque. In 1985. Then came acid house.
