Vegan Update: Delicious Nasty Paste

1) Vitamin B12 is good. You can find it in brewer's yeast and in Marmite or Vegemite (yeast extract). I don't expect anyone in the US to understand this. Thanks Carol Adams!

2) My mom told me that you know you're at a strange stage when you can taste the difference between different types of lentil. I've been at that stage for three weeks.

3) Iron. I had a sinking spell yesterday after a lot of leaping about a local park with the kids. Some iron stuff fixed that.

4) “Welcome to the New Power Generation. The reason why my voice is so clear is because there's no smack in my brain.”

  1. I understand Marmite. My wife couldn't live without it, so we have a bulk pallet of it. Eating something that more or less looks and smells like tar is a little disconcerting, though.

  3. My bad Kai I should've not included the nutritional yeast in my sideline to my bemused fellow Americans...tar is right Kai!

  4. 1) Pretty sure there's no B12 in brewer's yeast or Vegemite. I think Marmite might be fortified with B12. In fact, my understanding is that there is no (non-synthetic) non-animal source of B12.

    2) There are millions and millions of people in this world who meet your mum's criterion. Welcome!

(I've been vegan for about 12 years.. seem to be doing ok so far)

Also, Vegemite is the only kind of tar I eat! Delicious salty yeasty tarry goodness!

  5. I'm Italian and it took me a good couple of years of living in the U.K. to understand Marmite. My (very British) boyfriend hates it. I'm a vegetarian though, I wonder if that's a pre-requirements? Most people I know who like it seems to be vegetarians or vegans.

On a slight tangent, has anyone noticed how in recent months the expression '[something] being Marmite' has infiltrated language and now everybody says it - even at work a client was saying that about a PROPERTY.

    Total David Brent territory...

  6. I grew up eating brewer's yeast (though as a child was under the impression that it was actually called "Brujeist" and thus still call it so 'til this day). We ate it as a family on popcorn (sprinkled with some Tabasco too), broccoli, sweet potatoes rice, pasta...pretty tasty stuff.

I would also recommend using Bragg's Liquid Aminos, tastes kind of like soy sauce, now that you've crossed that line into the dark and honorable land of the disciplined and will need some bolstering in your nutrition.
